LITHONIA,
Ga.
(February, 8, 2014)—The brothers of Phi Kappa Kappa Chapter (East Point, GA)
hosted the 7th Annual Metro Atlanta High School Football Recruiting
Summit, where 55 high school senior football players, representing over 20 high
schools, attended the event at Miller Grove High School.
The purpose of the
event was to afford high school senior football players without scholarship
offers the opportunity to meet college football coaches with the prospect of
receiving a scholarship offer or admission into school as a preferred walk-on.
Representing seven institutions,
including four head coaches, were staffs from Benedict College, Clark Atlanta
University, Fort Valley State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Kentucky
State University, Morehouse College, and Point University.
In result, more than 15
attendees earned college scholarship offers on the spot, while a large
percentage of the group will receive notification from coaches on scholarship
and admission status, per each evaluation in the upcoming weeks.
“My staff and I were very impressed with the
amount of talent we saw today at the recruitment summit,” said Johnson C. Smith
University Head Coach and Fraternity member Steve Aycock (93-Alpha Gamma).
“Attending the Metro
Atlanta Recruitment Summit gave us a great opportunity to place our footprint
in the Metro Atlanta area,” added Kentucky State University Head Coach Joshua
Dean.
Prior to meeting the
coaches, the student-athletes received a mini workshop on financial aid,
admissions, and the NCAA Clearinghouse process.
“Since we have started
this event, it really has been a win-win for the kids and the colleges,” said
Bro. Alonzo Upshur, who founded the event after helping some of his former
student-athletes earn scholarship or admission after National Signing Day.
“Moving forward we want to continue to help contribute to the increase of male
enrollment in colleges. The recruitment summit is a great segue that will
continue to counter the crisis of enrollment issues that affect colleges today.”
To date, over 50 past attendees
have received athletic or academic scholarship, as well as admission into
various colleges around the southeast.
